Mercedes-Benz Unveils Updated Sprinter Range with New Electric Models

Mercedes-Benz has officially opened orders in Australia for its refreshed Sprinter van lineup, now boasting enhanced safety features, improved technology, and, notably, two all-electric models for the first time. Although the eSprinter's arrival to the Australian market comes five years after its European debut, Mercedes-Benz ensures that the latest generation offers substantial upgrades, including a larger battery and extended range.

The eSprinter's performance is driven by an e-axle that delivers 150kW and 400Nm to the rear wheels, powered by either an 81kWh battery for medium wheelbase models or a 113kWh battery for long wheelbase models. This electric powerhouse supports up to 11kW AC or 115kW DC charging, with the latter capable of charging the van from 10% to 80% in approximately 40 minutes.

With a driving range of up to 530km and a cargo capacity of up to 14 cubic metres, the latest eSprinter closely matches its diesel counterparts in productivity. The combustion-powered models continue to utilize 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines, offering a range of outputs from 84kW/300Nm to 140kW/450Nm, all paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, these models now feature a larger fuel tank, increased from 71 to 93 litres.

While visual changes to the Sprinter are minimal, significant technological upgrades have been introduced. These include easy lane change indicators, tyre pressure monitoring, headlight assist, and an optional digital rear-view mirror, all aimed at enhancing the operator's experience.

Smart Returns to Australia with New Electric SUVs

In other automotive news, the city car specialist Smart is set to make a comeback in Australia with a range of new Chinese-made fully electric SUVs. Among these, the high-powered Smart 5, unveiled in concept form at the recent Beijing Auto Show, is expected to attract significant local interest.

Now a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and the Geely Group, Smart has evolved from its original mission of producing compact cars for the European market. The brand previously had a brief stint in Australia, offering models like the ForTwo, the ForFour, and the Roadster before discontinuing sales over a decade ago.

The forthcoming medium-sized Smart 5 will be available with four powertrain options, including a high-performance variant delivering an impressive 475kW. This marks a significant shift for Smart, positioning it as a serious contender in the electric SUV market.
