A car maintenance checklist: how to look after your car.
From tyre pressure checks to EV charging tips, here are seven ways to keep your car in peak condition – even when you’re not driving it.
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of driving a brand-new car. The smell of new upholstery, the hum of the engine, the feeling of the steering wheel in your hands… now that it’s yours, regular care and maintenance are essential to keep it at peak performance and looking as sleek as the day you brought it home. While the inherent quality of a Mercedes-Benz will help ensure it lasts many years, you as an owner can make a difference by following this simple car maintenance checklist. Here are seven ways to keep your car in peak condition – even when you’re not driving it regularly.
1. Up-to-date servicingThe easiest way to keep your car in peak condition is to follow the recommended servicing schedule. Most Mercedes-Benz vehicles require a service every 12 months or 25,000km, or 20,000 km for Mercedes-AMG models – whichever comes first – but it’s important to consult your vehicle’s manual or contact your local retailer to confirm. You can also keep track of service intervals if you have the Mercedes-Benz App on your smartphone.A car service is like a health check-up. Our experts will check your Mercedes-Benz thoroughly for any issues, change the oil and replace components in accordance with Mercedes-Benz manufacturer guidelines. Prepaid service plans, available for three, four or five years, allow you to lock in the cost for peace of mind, too.For more information on what to expect at your next car service, check out this guide.
2. Keep up the pressureRegularly checking the pressure of your tyres will not only prolong their life, it can also improve fuel economy, ensure the tyres maintain the correct (and safe) level of grip on the road, and make for a smoother, more comfortable driving experience. The recommended tyre pressures can be found in the owner’s manual or on the vehicle placard (usually located inside the fuel filler flap or the door trim of the B-pillar).Tyre pressure checks are particularly important for cars that are parked for long periods of time, as under-inflation can allow flat spots to develop. Even with properly inflated tyres, it’s worth taking your car for a quick spin around the block every once in a while so it doesn’t sit in the same spot.Regular wheel alignments and rotating the tyres (front to back and vice versa) at least once a year (or as specified in your vehicle’s owner manual) will also improve their life expectancy by evening out the wear.
3. Power up properlyWhen it comes to powering up your car, different strategies apply depending on whether it’s an electric vehicle (EV) or has an internal combustion engine (ICE).If you own a petrol- or diesel-powered car, avoid running the tank all the way to empty. Sediment tends to settle at the bottom of a fuel tank, so if the tank is run nearly dry this can be picked up by the pump. If your car is going to be parked for a lengthy period, fill it up beforehand, because the more space there is in the tank, the easier it is for condensation to form.Similarly, when it comes to EVs, avoid fully charging or completely draining the battery. Keeping it between 20 and 80 per cent helps maintain battery health, and AC charging should be used whenever possible. While DC ultra-rapid fast chargers are fantastic when you’re in a hurry, a standard AC charger is better for the battery’s performance and longevity in the long run. If you aren’t going to be driving for a while, another neat trick is switching your Mercedes-Benz to Standby mode where available, so the car adjusts its settings to reduce the drain on the battery.
